National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) 

The National Innovation Visa (subclass 858) is a permanent residency visa for individuals with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in key sectors of national importance to Australia.

Who is Eligible?

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate international recognition and exceptional achievement in one of the following areas:

  • A Profession (e.g. medicine, engineering, law, business leadership)
  • Research & Academia (e.g. scientists, published researchers, PhD holders)
  • The Arts (e.g. authors, filmmakers, performers)
  • Sports (e.g. elite athletes or coaches)

You must also:

  • Still be active and prominent in your field
  • Be an asset to the Australian community
  • Demonstrate the ability to find work or establish yourself in your field in Australia
  • Be nominated via Form 1000 by a nationally reputable Australian individual or organisation in your field
  • If under 18 or over 55, show you are of exceptional benefit to Australia

Expression of Interest (EOI)

Invitation Only

This visa is by invitation only. To be considered, applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). If your profile meets the Department of Home Affairs’ standards, you may be invited to apply for the visa.

What is Considered “International Recognition”?

You must be recognised internationally as exceptional and outstanding in your field. Evidence may include:

  • Prestigious awards (e.g. Nobel Prize, Olympic Medal, Academy Award)
  • High-impact academic publications or citation metrics

English Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate functional English or pay a second Visa Application Charge (VAC).
